CEO Spotlight and the Origins of StarMed Benefits

Larry Long entered the health insurance industry through the world of construction. As an electrician and business owner, Long was invited to become a part of the first self-insured workers compensation group in Nevada. His work with the association evolved into a seat on the board of directors, then taking up the role of treasurer and, eventually, becoming chairman of the board of Builders Insurance Company. At its peak, Builders Insurance Company had approximately 900 clients, many of them contractors, and about $50 million in annual revenue.

When the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) was voted into law, Long and the board of directors decided to create an entity that could provide solutions for contractors to address their PPACA obligations. The initial solution was FreedomCare, but Long thought he could make the process more accessible and easier to understand. He and a partner left FreedomCare to launch the predecessor to StarMed in 2015. StarMed was rebranded and officially renamed in 2018. Since that time, StarMed has served hundreds of companies and more than 20,000 employees.

As a previous small business owner and contractor, Long understands the health needs of the industry as well as the overwhelming concerns and the financial, marketing and human resources demands placed upon entrepreneurs. StarMed is a small piece of a total simple solution to fulfill the requirements of the PPACA for business.

A graduate of Brigham Young University, Long married his wife, Tracey Bates Long, and they raised six children in Las Vegas. When he’s away from the office, Long enjoys golfing, boating and playing with his grandchildren.
